Mary was born in Washington, D.C. to Louise and Walter G. Kealy and had two siblings, Walter Jr. and Ruth. She studied nursing at Carlow University in Pittsburgh, where she met her future husband, Thomas K. Bednarz, who attended graduate school nearby at Carnegie Mellon University.
